Where to get your Marriage license

The Town or City Matters

Your CT marriage license must originate from the town where you are going to be married. That's because the original license will stay in an actual book that lives in that town's vital records room (a weirdly romantic place to be married).

License and Marriage Same Day Service

Even though you can get the marriage license and be married the same day, there is a two-business day waiting period between application for the marriage license and receiving it. 


The first step is to make an appointment with the town clerk - in the town where you'll be married - to apply for the marriage license. 


Most small towns have greater availability, either for the same day, or a day or two in advance. Some of my favorites are Hamden, Wallingford, North Haven, Cheshire, and East Haven.
